C'est un genre monotypique.

Ce Palmier a besoin d'un climat tropical et d'un sol jamais détrempé. Il tolère un large éventail d'autres conditions. Il est modérément tolérant au sel, mais est très sensible au jaunissement mortelle. Préférant le soleil, il tolére un peu d'ombre.


Bien que super-commune dans les régions tropicales et subtropicales, c'est une espèce qui réclame de la chaleur, personne n'a réussi à garder ce palmier vivant en extérieur dans le sud de la Californie.



Dans le sud de la Floride, le Addonida merrilli, aussi appelé le "Palmier de Noël", est extrêmement commun.
Ses graines rouges murrissent autour de Noël, d'ou son surnom.
